What is the Karlstad Model

The Karlstad Model is a language training model for children, young people and adults with language, speech or communication difficulties. The model is used for people of all ages, regardless of diagnosis.

The Karlstad Model is based on children's natural language development and offers concrete suggestions for exercises and materials that can be used in language training.

The model emphasizes pedagogical principles such as structure, continuity and clarification, and has developed learning materials that focus on learning objectives as well as making learning simple, clear and fun.

In the Karlstad model, networks are central to language training. The idea that everyone around the child is an important resource is fundamental to the model.

In addition, the model uses various visual expressions to help develop spoken language. This involves using signs, writing and images in addition to speech in everyday life and in language training.

Through our work, we are familiar with the Karlstad Model and the use of signs and symbols to visualize communication. As special educators and counselors, we have used the Karlstad Model in the field and have a broad and extensive experience of translating the model into practice adapted to the child and their environment. We have deep insight into the model's background, value base, structure and how to train and stimulate skills from performative communication, the word stage, simple and extended grammar. We have worked to train others in the Karlstad Model through model learning, guidance, courses and networks.

The Karlstad Model is the pedagogy of opportunity and provides a unique tool to give communication, participation and language to everyone!
